Bochco's "Raising the Bar": bad judge, good lawyer

There's a deuce in Steven Bochco's new TV series, and she's not wearing Prada.

Judge Trudy Kessler (Jane Kaczmarek) has a spirit as black as her robes in "Raising the Bar," which debuts at 10 tonight on TNT. She's a hanging label who, in a exactly world, would be strung up herself.

The pilot pits Kessler against New York City public defender Jerry Kellerman (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), world Health Organization definitely wears the andrew D. White robes in this drama.

Jerry, shaggy and sometimes stentorian, is granted to dramatic declarations around truth, justice and the wretched nature of the legal system. You often get the feeling he really, rattling wants you to know what a saint he is.

His clients aren't complaintive, however. Jerry will even go to jail for them, landing in lockup a couple of times thanks to the unlikable judge.

The hourlong show is tightly written and features other vibrant characters, including Michelle Ernhardt (Melissa Sagemiller), an help district attorney with an idealistic streak of her own, and Bobbi Gilardi (Natalia Cigluiti), from the public defender's office.

Judge Trudy has a creepy opposite number in District Attorney Nick Balco (Currie Graham), a bloviating reptilian obsessed with putting scalps on the wall. His philosophy of crime and punishment is simple: If a suspect didn't dedicate the crime he's accused of, "trust me, he did something else we didn't pay back him for." The cool head in this business office belongs to Marcus McGrath (J. August Richards), a lawyer whose sense of justice is totally at odds with Balco's.

The populace defender's power, run by Roz Whitman (Gloria Reuben), is right out of central cast, complete with a Greenpeace bumper toughie and one proclaiming "Make Love, Not War." Yet there's an odd man out: Richard Patrick Woolsley (Teddy Sears), a rich kid world Health Organization wears turnup links to work and has the hots for Roz. Immaculate or not, he's defending a guy who stabbed a man 36 times, then did a Lorena Bobbitt subprogram on the corpse.

The cardinal combat is between Jerry and Trudy, who spar over the fate of a humans falsely accused of rape. Trudy lectures Jerry that "process creates truth," though hers includes piling on seven geezerhood for possessing a pocket knife and setting bail beyond reach.

The show has addiction electric potential, fueled by intertwining amatory story lines, especially Trudy's passion for her legal philosophy clerk, Charlie Sagansky (Jonathan Scarfe).

PTSD Influences Levels Of Depression And Pain

�Patients with accident or trauma related chronic painfulness often have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. What isn't clearly known, however, is how PTSD relates to mood disorders and pain severity in chronic pain patients.




University of Michigan researchers examined the contribution of PTSD to the pain experience, functional disability and frequency of depressive symptoms. They studied 241 patients referred to the university hospital's pain rehabilitation programme who reported their pain began subsequently a traumatic injury. The subjects accomplished the McGill Pain Questionnaire and were administered the Pain Disability Index and the Post-traumatic Chronic Pain Test.

Scent Of A Woman Director Risi Dies

Oscar-nominated Italian director DINO RISI has died at the age of 91.

Risi died at his home in Rome, Italy on Saturday (07Jun08) following a long spell of ill health.

He received two Academy Award nominations for his 1974 picture Profumo di Donna (Scent of a Woman) and the1993 remake gained Al Pacino a Best Actor Oscar.

Kerry Katona's mother-in-law says the former singer will fall to pieces if husband Mark Croft leaves her.

Following allegations that Mark had been chatting up girls on a night out in Liverpool, his mother, Marilyn, has said Kerry will do anything to keep her man because she can�t face another divorce.

"She�s paranoid that he�ll leave her for another woman. Kerry doesn�t want another failed marriage like she has with Brian," Marilyn says."It�s clear she�s still obsessed with him.

"She always used to mention his name in front of me and Mark. I thought at the time she shouldn�t do that.

"Although she pines for Brian, she knows he�s never going to have her back. He even told Kerry�s mum that she forced him to turn to drink with her behavior.�

And Marilyn says, despite the couple's luxurious lifestyle, they are both miserable. She adds to Britain's Closer magazine, "Mark has all the mod cons and fast cars, but they�re bored out of their brains because they never go out. They�re like prisoners in their mansion. Kerry spends days in bed with the curtains drawn. It�s not normal.

"Mark plays all day on his PlayStation while Kerry occasionally checks the internet to see what people are writing about her."

Marilyn also claims Kerry, 27, struggles to cope with looking after her four children. She adds, "Mark and Kerry hardly ever see their kids � it�s the nanny who brings them up. As soon as the girls come in from school they�re up in their rooms and that�s not right.

"She�s driven everyone around her away by constantly acting like Queen Bee.

"Kerry refuses to listen to people � she thinks everyone is just after her money. She�s in her own little world.�

Fearing Kerry will never give up drinking and smoking, Marilyn said, "I hope she doesn�t turn out like Amy Winehouse."

Spears parenting book is postponed

A Christian publisher in the US has said that it has postponed plans to release a parenting book by Lynne Spears, the mother of Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears.
Reuters reports that Lindsey Nobles, a spokesperson for publisher Thomas Nelson, said: "We have postponed the book indefinitely."
No reason was given for the decision.
The working title for the book was 'Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World'.
It was described as "a parenting book that's going to have faith elements to it" and was due out in time for Mother's Day in the US in May.
Earlier this week it was announced that 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears was pregnant.
Spokesperson Nobles said: "We understand that Lynne needs to spend time with her family now."
